Impairment

Impairment can result from a number of different things including; distractions, sleep deprivation, drugs, and alcohol. Whatever the reason may be it is never safe to operate a motor vehicle while impaired. According to surveys nearly 97% of Americans consider impaired driving by others a threat to their families and themselves.

Alcohol Impairment

It is a well known fact that alcohol causes impairment and is directly related to many motor vehicle accidents in the U.S. But it is not known how many motor vehicle accidents each year are caused by alcohol alone. It is a more accurate estimate to look at how many fatal crashes are caused by alcohol each year.

In 1999, it was estimated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that on average 30% of all traffic accidents that resulted in a death had at least one of the drivers or a non occupant having a BAC of .10 or higher. This percentage is based off of assertions that if alcohol was not present none of these fatal car accidents would have occurred.
